The current generation of gaming plattforms shows, that the technical development (best graphics, best sound) is not the driving force of the console sales. Instead, innovative gameplay extensions take the place of that. And that's exactly the paradigm shift once predicted by Nintendo during their Wii announcement (former name: Nintendo Revolution).

Because the compulsion to a technical arms race is taking a backseat (at the moment), a new hardware generation isn't needed so urgently. At the same time, some games' graphics (Uncharted 2, Gears of War 3, Crysis 2) are on such a detailed level that it's hard to imagine any greater boosts. The optical step from 2D pixel junk to a 3D view was vastly more impressive than the jump from PS2/Xbox games to the next generation (just compare God of War 2 to God of War 3).

The resolution solely has some room to improve regarding the actual generation of television: Stereoskopic 3D in two simultanously computed pictures in 1080p has to be the next goal.
