Quelle: coroflot.com If you look at the actual life cycle of consoles, things seem to be a bit weird. The current generation of consoles is already on the market for four to five years. It's time for the next generation to get off the starting blocks. But right now there are rumors abound about the Xbox 720, the PS4 and Wii HD / Wii 2. But why?

Quelle: ps3maven.com At first, let's have a look at the past of the three big console manufacturers: Sony published the PSOne in 1995 in Europa (one year ealier in Japan) the PS2 followed back in 2000 and finally, the PS3 in 2006. According to this calculation, PS4 could be hitting stores by no later than 2012 - That's certainly a desirable case.

Microsoft , however, has let down the first Xbox (released 2001 in America) after approximately four years. The Xbox 360, being on the market for five years now, is already at its peak. And there's no Xbox 720 in sight.

Quelle: ps3maven.com Last, but not least Nintendo: Five years lie in between their last consoles N64, GameCube and Nintendo Wii. But there's no info about a Wii successor for 2011. Instead, the company is concentrating on the release of the Nintendo 3DS.

All in all, the life time of the actual consoles seems to have extended. Capcom for example expects the Xbox 720 und PlayStation 4 to appear "soonest in two to three years".
