Rage im Test: So wertet die internationale Fachpresse
Eine neue Ära der Ego-Shooter läutet id Software mit Rage zwar nicht ein, aber trotzdem ist es ein richtig gutes Spiel geworden - so die Meinung der internationalen Fachpresse zum Thema Rage. Unser Test befindet sich derzeit noch in Arbeit, deswegen bekommt ihr hier die Übersicht über die Wertungen unserer internationalen Kollegen.
Kann Rage im Test überzeugen? Diese Frage werden wir euch in Kürze beantworten können, denn unser Test zu id Softwares neuestem Streich befindet sich derzeit in der Mache. Matti will sich für den Rage-Test natürlich viel Zeit lassen, nachdem die Testversion erst recht spät bei uns eintraf. Doch jetzt wird fleißig getestet, solange es von uns noch keine Test-Wertung zu Rage gibt, könnt ihr hier nachlesen, wie die internationale Fachpresse über Rage urteilt.
PC Games – 87/100
Für die Schießereien liebe ich Rage: Die sind gewaltig, spannend und erstklassig umgesetzt. Das Schießgefühl, das Erleben der Kämpfe, der Stress des Überlebens, die Handhabung jeder einzelnen Waffe liefert Rage bravurös ab, serviert einen Shooter, wie wir ihn schon lange nicht mehr gesehen haben. Gegner, die sich wehren! Wie Rage Schusswechsel zelebriert, verdient alleine schon eine Würdigung.
TeamXbox – 9,5 / 10
While the game doesn't necessarily introduce any kind of ground-breaking gameplay elements, what it does is perform some tried-and-true FPS staples (and some newer concepts too) at a very high level, and hits the mark an overwhelming majority of the time. I am happy to have this game in my collection, and believe that shooter fans the world over would be derelict in their responsibilities as gamers to not give this one a try. It is simply a fun game to play. I had a blast with it, and I hope you do the same as well.
CVG – 89 / 100
While story and structure may never have been what id games were about, expertly refined gameplay mechanics are what the fans have craved - and Rage has that, along with tonnes of variety. It might not be the perfect FPS those four years of development suggested, but get your hands on that shotgun and you'll know it was worth the wait.
Joystiq – 3 / 5
The aspects of RAGE that seem interesting and different at first never grow or expand. The enemy reactions, the clutching, the begging for their lives, it's repeated identically so often over the course of the game that it loses any impact or meaning. The town that initially holds the promise of a big, wide, asteroid-murdered world is a facade for a few fetch quests down some of the most guided, narrow shooter levels this side of a Call of Duty title. RAGE is pretty at times, but it's not enough to paint over the truth - that Id's labor feels like a scaffolding for a game of bolder ideas, ideas which, for whatever reason, aren't realized. And the game that is there just isn't enough to compete with other, better shooters we've seen this year.
Strategy Informer – 6,5 / 10
At the end of the day, Rage is going to sell by the bucketload due to its remarkable lineage, and there will be armies of fans who will defend it to the bitter end, no matter whether they enjoyed it or not. But for those who will listen: Rage is flawed from the get-go, and by the time it finds its legs, its all too little, too late.

Rage is a game that would have benefitted from being streamlined, with additional FPS levels replacing the awkward driving. It should have been an id game. Instead it occupies this weird halfway-house between Borderlands, Motorstorm and Doom, not quite an RPG, not quite a racer and not quite an FPS. While it's always admirable when a developer tries something different, with Rage it's impossible not to wish that id had stuck to what they know; gunplay. When the game decides to do what it does best, it reminds you this is one of the best pure shooters in years. But with all the extra things convoluting it, it's hard to feel it makes the kind of impact it should have.

I enjoyed RAGE quite a bit at a few points when I was playing the campaign, but I see few reasons to head back in (or even to fully complete it), even with the promise of higher difficulties. id has made a title that does one thing well, but it doesn't feel as though it really put much effort into the other aspects of the game beyond the flashy visuals of the new idTech 5 engine. The story is razor thin. The AI, though interesting to watch, quickly becomes predictable. The minigames, racing and driving are fairly minor diversions. The world isn't really meant for you to explore. And in the end, it's not a place you'll need to live in: a visit is more than enough.

It's true that other shooters will probably sell more units than Rage, but do any of them have a crossbow bolt that, upon hitting a target, allows you to pilot the victim towards a group of their comrades, and then blow the lot of them to pieces? No. No they do not ...
Eurogamer – 8 / 10
Judged on game design and content, then, it's slightly anachronistic, but as a toy box full of things you can only do in games, Rage is warm-hearted and refreshing. It's not going to change the world, but it does serve as a timely reminder of that other thing id Software games always did besides smashing through some new technological barrier. They made shooting things fun, and it's nice to have that back.
Gamespot – 8 / 10
Though the story gets a bit too cliched, there is a robust amount of adventuring to be done in a world that rewards you for your attentions. Rage is a beautiful game that looks equally stunning with or without the hefty installation (which reduces the load times and is optional on the 360 but required on the PS3), so regardless of which platform you play on, you'll find a rich and rewarding adventure that sets a new visual standard for the postapocalyptic wasteland.
IGN – 8,5 / 10
Rage proves a lot of what we already knew about id Software. The studio knows how to make great shooters and deliver incredible visuals and animations. With some of the elements we're not as familiar with in id games like an emphasis on story, Rage isn't as strong. The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage's shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game's characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable. As a result, Rage starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn't very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn't revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.
RipTen – 9,5 / 10
To sum this all up, I simply must state that id Software has taken the FPS genre to a new level. They've created the FPS people have been waiting for for years – even if they didn't know it. Stacked with intense, well polished gameplay, astonishing visuals, competitive multiplayer and and even great co-op, RAGE is easily the best single player FPS this year, and in my experience, the best FPS I've ever played.
EGM – 9,5 / 10
All things considered, Rage is one hell of an experience. It would be easy to knock this game for some of the elements it lacks, but what is here in is easily on par with some of the best titles in the genre. If you're a fan of FPS gaming and the kids at id, you won't be sorry you picked this one up.
1Up – B / A+
Rage fits that mold snugly, but it's nothing revolutionary. It comes from a different kind of Id, one that would rather play with existing conventions than reinvent them. Conversely, it's the same Id that puts look and feel on the same high pillar, and it's impossible to call Rage badly-composed. I just don't think it's going to be remembered as anything but a sleeper hit of the fall of 2011.
UGO – A- / A+
RAGE doesn't handle everything perfectly however. The game's story might be a bit too thin for its own good and it stutters towards anticlimax in its last third - which involves a setting change, and a quick march to the story's end. The story starts slowly and churns and builds over the course of dozens of side missions and campaign missions, but quickly wraps up over the course of a half dozen missions after the setting change from the game's major city, Wellspring, to its second major city Subway City. The end may be anticlimactic and screaming for additional DLC missions, but it doesn't mar the overall experience.

At its core though, RAGE is a triumph for id Software. The game's strengths far outweigh its shortcomings and for shooter fans looking for a challenging, visceral experience that isn't akin to shooting fish in a barrel, you're going to find it here. id Tech 5 looks incredible, across all platforms, and the team's elevation in level-design, art and AI are the best they've ever produced. Despite following post-apocalyptic trends, RAGE stands on its own and could have been oh-so-much more with a bit more love in the aforementioned shortfalls - here's hoping the next installment addresses these and adds more to everything they did right. Definitely worth the investment.

There's little not to like. The core gameplay is well designed and executed and there's plenty to do if you fancy a change of pace. With the FPS genre currently defined and dominated by standardised modern-military shooters, Rage comes as a very welcome breath of fresh air.
